The first steps on the Buddhist path
Author: Dalai Lama - Thubten Chodron.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama has been teaching Buddhism publicly for decades. The series Wisdom and compassion, Of which The first steps on the Buddhist path is the first volume, collects his presentations of each phase of the path to enlightenment, compiled and written by one of his leading Western disciples, the American nun Thubten Chodron.
The Buddha wanted his students to investigate, to find out for themselves if what he said was true. As a scholar of the Buddha, the Dalai Lama fosters the same spirit of inquiry, and as the rich tradition of the Buddha makes its way into new lands and cultures, His Holiness recognized that new approaches are needed to enable researchers in the West to experience the relevance of the liberating message in one's life. Such an approach cannot assume that listeners are free from doubts and already have faith in the fundamental principles of Buddhism.
This book, therefore, starts from the universal human desire for happiness and presents the dynamic nature of the mind. This first volume also provides a wide range of reflections on Buddhist history and foundations, contemporary issues and personal experiences of the Dalai Lama. It is only an introduction to Buddhism, but it also provides a basis for the systematic illumination of the path in the volumes to come.
