Red Mahakala mask
Wooden mask depicting the red Mahakala "protector of the dharma". The color of Mahakala is usually black, since as all colors are absorbed by black, all names and forms merge into Mahakala, testifying to its absolute nature (principle of Nirguna Brahman). Another constant element in the depictions of the divinity is the crown of five skulls, a metaphor for the transfiguration of the five kleshas in the five Dhyani Buddhas.
The main heterogeneous element in the representations of Mahakala is the number of arms, but other variable characters are the number of heads, the presence or absence of genitals, the number and type of objects in the hands, etc.
