The name Maitreya (Metteyya in pāli) comes from the Sanskrit feminine noun maitrī (mettā in pāli) which means "benevolence", "goodwill", connected to the Sanskrit masculine noun mitra (mitta in pāli) which means "friend".
Maitreya will be the next Buddha, successor of Gautama Buddha, whose rebirth is expected by Buddhists; it is the only bodhisattva whose veneration is admitted by all Buddhist schools (Nikāya, Theravāda, Mahāyāna and Vajrayāna).
Maitreya is typically represented seated in the western, i.e. with both feet on the ground, indicating that he is ready to rise from the throne on which he sits to be reborn on Earth when the time comes.
