Tangka Chenresig with red brocade
Cenresig, or Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit, is a bodhisattva who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas. It is revered in various Mahayana Buddhist traditions, both in male and female form. In this tangka he is represented with a thousand arms and a thousand eyes, one eye in each palm of his hands, and with eleven heads. It is the form upon which the Nyiungne fasting retreat meditation is based.
