Hand carved bone seal with Manjushri portrait.
Manjushri is a Bodhisattva, and in Mahayana Buddhism he represents the Transcendental Wisdom of the Buddha. As such it is mentioned many times in the Prajnaparamita Sutra, among the oldest texts of Mahayana Buddhism. He is represented seated in the lotus position, holding a flaming sword in his right hand, to cut through ignorance and the dualistic view of reality. In his left hand he holds a lotus flower on which rests the text of the Prajnaparamita Sutra in 80,000 verses. Manjushri has been revered and also used in tantric practice in the following countries: China, Tibet, Nepal, Japan and Indonesia.
