The art of being patient

Author: Dalai Lama

"Any positive action", states a famous Buddhist text, "can be destroyed by a single moment of anger".

Among the many sentences of Eastern thought, perhaps none is more familiar to us than this one. An endemic phenomenon of our culture, anger is, in fact, one of the undisputed roots of the unhappiness, suffering, discord and violence that characterize our world.

It is manifested hundreds of times a day by the media.

It is found in the way disputes are settled in our society; in the way political leaders behave in the halls of Parliament; in the rise of domestic violence and abuse of children; in the sense of self-hatred that pervades our culture.

The antidote to anger is patience, cultivated by almost all religions and ancient knowledge, but elevated to a real art only by Buddhism.
Tenzin Gyatso, the XIV Dalai Lama, reveals in this book the main techniques of the art of being patient, and shows how patience does not presuppose passivity and surrender at all but, on the contrary, firmness and resoluteness of character.
